Grants and late payments


Island Dynamics is often asked whether it can provide:

• A travel grant or other funding

• The ability for delegates to pay late or to pay onsite.


Unfortunately, we are not able to assist delegates in this manner. There are a few reasons for this. First, we are a very small organisation, and our conferences operate on the basis of limited or no external funding. That is to say, all expenses are paid for by registration fees. In addition, because we value community engagement, we seek to make attendance at our conferences either free of charge or very inexpensive for listeners from the local community. This removes another potential source of income. For these reasons, we are not able to offer travel or accommodation grants or discounts on the registration fees, which reflect the real costs of putting on the conference.


This does not explain why we are unable to accept late payments or onsite payments. The reason for this is that, in our experience, the majority of people who ask to pay late or onsite never end up attending the conference. This not only disrupts the conference programme; it also means that because we have provisionally registered them, Island Dynamics still needs to pay for their services and supplies. In other words, generally speaking, people who ask to pay late or onsite end up raising the prices for everyone else. Of course, many people who ask to pay late or onsite would end up attending and contributing significantly to the conference. But since there is no way for us to know who is trustworthy and who is not, it is necessary for us to ‘err on the side of caution’ and make a policy of not allowing late registration or onsite payment.


In other words, we sincerely hope that you find a way of attending the conference, but we cannot assist you with finances. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these policies.
