1st Island Dynamics Conference:

Taking Shetland out of the Box

7-10 May 2009, Lerwick

The 1st Island Dynamics Conference’s theme was the role of islands as meeting places for cultures. The event featured 57 speakers from 22 sovereign states/autonomous regions, with presentations from such disciplines as Folklore, Place Branding, History, Anthropology, Economics, Heritage Studies, and Geography. The programme included a ‘Perspectives on Island Autonomy’ series with participation from island politicians and high-ranking civil servants. Bo Almqvist and Carsten Jensen were keynote keynote speakers.

Financial support  was provided by the European Commission Office in Scotland, Nordisk Kulturfond, the Royal Historical Society, and the Shetland Fudge Company.
