Biography

Martin Rheinheimer is Professor of Maritime and Regional History and Director of the Center for Maritime & Regional Studies at University of Southern Denmark, Esbjerg. He studied history and Latin and Greek philology at the University of Kiel and Aristotle University of Thessalonki. Rheinheimer holds a PhD and a PD from University of Kiel. His research centres on maritime, regional, and border studies particularly of the Wadden Sea area and its islands. Rheinheimer is a member of the Arbeitskreis für Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte Schleswig-Holsteins research network, and his work on the history of the North Frisian island of Amrum has resulted in lectures and appearances on Danish and German television and radio. He has made an in-depth study of the life of the 18th-Century Amrum sailor Hark Olufs. He has also researched gravestone carvings and inscriptions in maritime communities and undertaken a content analysis of early postcards of the Wadden Sea islands, charting trends in these tourist destinations’ pictorial representations.
