Biography

Terry Gunnell is Senior Lecturer in Folkloristics at the University of Iceland. Gunnell holds a BA in Drama and Theatre Arts (University of Birmingham, UK), a Bacc.Phil in Icelandic for Foreign Students (University of Iceland), and a PhD (University of Leeds, UK). His research has centred on performance traditions in Medieval and Modern Scandinavia and the North Atlantic. Gunnell is on the editorial board of Encyclopedia of Romantic Nationalism in Europe; sits on the international advisory board of Béaloideas:The Journal of the Folklore of Ireland Society; and organised the 5th Celtic-Nordic-Baltic Folklore Symposium on Folk Legends in 2005. He is a working member of the Royal Gustavus Adolphus Academy as well as a member of the International Society for Folk Narrative Research and the Finnish Literature Society.

 

Gunnell has been influential in the fields of folk belief and legends, guising, and Eddic poetry. He is author of The Origins of Drama in Scandinavia and edited Masks and Mumming in the Nordic Area  and Legends and Landscape.
